Welcome We look forward to welcoming you to the Cartwright Arms Hotel in the ancient village of Aynho which is steeped in local history. The village is dominated by the glorious architecture of Aynho Park mansion and grounds which in recent times has yielded archaeological evidence of several large Roman houses. Aynho is quietly located but only four miles from Junction 10 of the M40 and is an excellent base from which to explore Oxford the Cotswolds Blenheim palace Stratford upon Avon Warwick and the many stately homes and lovely gardens for which the area is renowned. It will be our pleasure to be your hosts as you explore and enjoy the many attractions nearby. There has been an inn on the site of the Cartwright Arms for centuries. The present building dates from the mid sixteenth century. Today the hotel offers rest comfortable en suite accommodation refreshment and traditional English Hospitality. All 20 rooms have private en suite bathrooms colour televisions and coffee making facilitiesEvery Room is individual and is furnished to a high standard. Rooms in the inn are furnished in period style. The bedrooms situated in the recently converted coach house are very spacious and have access to the private car park in the courtyard. The Cartwright Arms is ideally located for exploring and visiting the many places of interest nearby. Oxford Blenheim Palace the north Cotswolds Stratford upon Avon and Warwick are all within a short distance.Paddy Burt wrote about the Cartwright Arms Hotel in the Daily Telegraph in her column Room Service The entrance is via an archway at the side and then through a conservatory in which the most noticeable thing is a large fir tree in a pot. The sound of voices leads us to a first floor room reached by a surprisingly elegant staircase. This isn't quite as pretty as the room I'd inspected the previous week but comes close. It's very blue. The creamy wallpaper has a small blue motif the canopied bed a lavish draping of cobalt blue curtains plus blue patterned padded headboards. The furniture's the sort I want to take home especially the tall pale handsome chest of drawers. Downstairs the bar is just the opposite full of lamps knick knacks and pictures. No one thank goodness could describe it as smart. It's cosy. The lighting is dim bar tables are fashioned from barrels and there is a chiming clock. Sitting back on our corner settee we soak up the agreeable atmosphere. On a blackboard above a huge fireplace a fairly predictable pub menu is chalked up. We guess the portions will be huge. Candlelit tables at the far end of the room woo diners. There are more settees up here too so we arrange ourselves side by side to catch the view of the bar and all its going on.

NEARBY ATTRACTION: Sulgrave Manor

Sulgrave Manor is the ancestral home in England of George Washington's family. The property is situated in the beautiful rural village community of Sulgrave, near to Banbury and about 30 miles from both Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford. It was bought by Lawrence Washington, a wealthy wool merchant and Mayor of Northampton, when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. Lawrence's descendants lived for over 120 years (1539 - 1659) in the home that he built. When the English Civil War between Charles I and Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentary Army broke out, many of Lawrence Washington's descendants supported the Royalist cause. After the defeat of Charles I, many Royalists emigrated to Virginia and in 1656, Colonel John Washington, the great-great grandson of Lawrence Washington and the great-grandfather of George Washington , crossed the Atlantic. More than 250 years after the first Washingtons landed in America, President Theodore Roosevelt decided that there should be a proper celebration of the centenary of the end of the war of 1812 - the last serious armed conflict between England and America. Prominent statesmen and civic leaders were recruited to form peace committees in the United States, in Great Britain and in Canada. The British committee decided to purchase George Washington's ancestral home on behalf of the British and American people and, after World War I, King George V was a leading contributor to the Sulgrave Manor Restoration Fund.
